Wesselkvartalet is an award-winning mixed-use development in Asker, integrating innovative renewable energy systems and smart building flexibility solutions.
Wesselkvartalet is a new, vibrant part of Asker city center, Norway, with 52 high-quality apartments, restaurants and shops at street level, offices on the second floor, and 250 EV-ready parking spaces. Awarded the State Architecture Prize 2025 for “good urban housing,” it features Mediterranean-inspired architecture with curved, unique forms across floors 2–7. An innovative renewable energy substation with CO₂ and NH₃ heat pumps and deep and shallow boreholes supplies both Wesselkvartalet and central Asker. The building service system includes floor heating, air handling units for different users, and full access to building and energy monitoring systems throughout the project.
The Asker pilot site will implement following solutions.
Advanced control for the heat pump for better thermal storage utilization and peak shaving
Advanced building control to improve energy flexibility and heat pump operation
Exporting heat to neighboring buildings
Use of AI to optimize the energy flows in the area
